Lady Pirates down Spartans in conference action

Norfolk, Va. - The Hampton University volleyball team improved its record to 4-6 (0-0 MEAC) with a victory over interstate rival Norfolk State (2-8, 0-0 MEAC) Tuesday night inside Echols Hall on the campus of Norfolk State University. H.U. posted scores of 30-28, 30-23, 22-30 and 30-19 in the win.
Two Lady Pirates recorded double-double performances in kills and digs for the match. Seeing double for Hampton was outside hitter Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas, Texas/ Lincoln HS) with 14 kills and 12 digs and middle hitter Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/ Duncanville HS) who added 13 kills and 11 digs. Setter Jasmin Elder (Upper Marloboro, Md. / Gwynn HS) directed the offense with 35 assists, one block assists and five service aces. Sophomore middle hitter Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo. / Center Senior HS) smacked down nine kills and connected a match-high five block assists while junior middle hitter Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif. / UC-Riverside) chipped in with five kills along with five total blocks.
The blue and white dominated at the net, posting 10.0 total blocks against 3.0 by the Lady Spartans. Hampton’s backcourt tallied 57 digs, where libero Alyssa Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Snider HS) posted a match-high 19.
Game one got out to a tight start with Hampton holding on to a two point lead with the score at 8-6 until back to back kills by Lady Spartan Karina Moore evened the score at 10-10 causing the Lady Pirates to take a timeout. Out of the huddle a kill by Elder triggered a 9-2 scoring run by the Lady Pirates as Hampton took a 21-12 lead late in the opening set. After a Norfolk State timeout, Shea Kersey served the Spartans to nine straight points to tie the game at 21-21 before back to back kills by Solange Honroe and Chanel Barnes gave the Spartans their first lead of the game leading 25-23. Nevertheless a kill by Williams brought H.U. back within one before a kill by NSU’s Afryea Allen put the Spartans ahead again by two. However a block by Vincent followed by a kill by Ighedosa pushed the Pirates past NSU 30-28 for the game one victory.
Five of NSU’s first eight points in game two came as the result of Hampton errors. The errors gave the Lady Spartans and early 8-2 lead before by Ighedosa sparked a H.U. scoring run. With the score tied at 14-14, the Lady Pirates scored four points to take a 17-16 lead midway through the set. The Pirates hung on to the lead extending it to seven points and winning the second set 30-23.
The Spartans claimed the victory in game three as they limited the Lady Pirates to just eight kills as team and a .025 attacking percentage to claim the third set 30-22.
Hampton went on an early 7-1 run in game four to take an early lead in the fourth set. NSU scored seven points to come within striking distance, but Hampton went on a 7-3 run to clinch its fourth win of the season with a 30-19 game-four victory.
Afryea Allen led the Spartans with 22 kills and six digs as Hampton handed NSU their seventh loss of the season.
Next the Lady Pirates will head to the nation’s capital to battle Howard University on Thurs., Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
